March 20, 2009 - Workshop: Should I Sell or Should I Hold
Presented by: Foley Hoag, Lexington Wealth Management, LockeBridge LLC, Wolf & Company
Synopsis
If you're like most small business owners operating in the middle market, a substantial portion, if not most, of your net worth is invested in your business. Yet with today’s volatile market conditions, many small business owners are watching the equity value in their business decrease. Many owners have attempted to sell their business, themselves or with the assitance of advisors, but have fallen victim to the increase in failed closings. Going back to market after a failed attempt can result in a substantial devaluation. Few owners realize that exit preparation and strategy is just as important as any operating strategy. Effective planning usually results in higher values and increased closing rates.
If you’ve decided not to exit the business, having a well defined capital access plan may be a critical determinant in your ability to sustain a substantial decrease in cash flow. Whether capital is obtained from a minority equity offering or a debt offering, structuring the offering effectively and acessing capital from unconventional sources can substantially increase shareholder value.
